Political Ups and Downs for Ex-Officers
First of all, sincere apologies for not reporting earlier on the results of Bermuda’s General Election held on 17th December 2012, in which the new OBA Party squeezed to victory over the PLP in a nail biting finish, with a 19-17 majority. For full results CLICK HERE
We happened to have no less than five former police officers standing for Parliament:-
- Wayne Perinchief, former Assistant COP, who was first elected to Parliament in 1998 and had held positions in the PLP Cabinet, including Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, Minister of National Drug Control, and more recently as the Minister of National Security;
- Jonathan Smith, former Commissioner of Police, who was appointed a PLP Senator in 2011 as the Junior Minister for National Security, Transport & Government Estates, and Public Information Services. Jonathan was standing as an MP for the first time;
- Ed Bailey, former Detective Sergeant, who had previously served as a UBP MP in 1985 and srtood as an OBA candidate. Ed is currently an Acting Magistrate;
- Jeff Baron, former PC who was standing for the first time as an OBA candidate; and
- Meredith (Brady) Stapff, who was standing for the first time, as an Independent Candidate.
We are disappointed to report that none of our former officers were successful. However, Jeff Baron has since been appointed as an OBA Senator and will hold the office of Junior Minister for Public Safety and Legal Affairs.
